The biotope of Apolakia Dam


The dam of Apolakkia was built in 1989. Its construction was originally designed to facilitate irrigation in the southern part of Rhodes.

It is located just 2 km. away from the village of Apolakkia. Romans where the first who taught the concentration of water for irrigation purposes. They were followed in history by the Italians, who settled in the Dodecanese islands. Gradually, the lake began to evolve into an important wetland area and mild activities, where nature lovers can observe wild birds. On its banks there are tables, where you can have picnic and wooden houses for hosting scout. In the summer rowing and sailing races take palce. Near Apolakkia dam lies the stone monastery of Agios Georgios of Varda.
